Best Pubs in Lancaster with Beer Gardens

by | May 5, 2021 | Students

With pubs and bars currently limited to only serving drinks outside, you might be wondering where the best place is to go in Lancaster. If you’re a Lancaster student looking for somewhere to get a drink while we wait for indoor seating at bars and pubs to reopen, you’ve come to the right place.

Here’s a selection of some of the best beer gardens in Lancaster:

The Water Witch

The Water Witch can be found in Lancaster city centre right next to the canal, opposite the ALDI shop. It is a wonderfully rustic pub that was converted from purpose-built stables in 1978 and offers a vast range of drinks and freshly made meals and desserts. Over 70% of their ales come from breweries less than 50 miles away, and they offer over 25 different wines by the glass and a further 26 on their wine list.

Their outdoor seating lines the canal, giving you an excellent view of the steady water while you enjoy your evening. It’s the perfect drinking spot in the very heart of the city centre.

Pendle Witch

The Pendle Witch is now a Great Traditional Pub that can be found in the city centre on Penny Street, down from the KFC. They serve a range of great cask ales and a fantastic selection of food. There is plenty of outdoor seating spaces, but make sure you book a table to avoid being disappointed.

The Boot and Shoe

Closer to Lancaster University Campus and right next to Booths, The Boot and Shoe is a family-friendly pub with a fantastic, large beer garden for alfresco dining and drinks. Their bar is well stocked with JW Lees’ family of beers and a selection of spirits, soft drinks and wines from around the world.

Their menu serves pub classics with seasonal ingredients, and they have a wood-fired pizza oven for tasty pizzas served into the evening.

Merchants 1688

Merchants 1688 is on Castle Hill in the city centre close to Lancaster Castle. It provides fine pub dining in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, as well as a truly historical feel with its 300-year-old former wine merchant’s cellars.

Their meals are freshly made with local ingredients, and their drinks range from fine wines to cask ales and craft beers. You can book an outdoor table, or you can show up and get one of their unreserved tables on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Borough

The Borough can be found in the centre of Lancaster in Dalton Square, spread over three floors of a Georgian townhouse. It was named the best pub in Lancaster in 2016 and has its own microbrewery.

There are plenty of tables outdoors, with overhead shelters for those days when the weather isn’t its best. Their menu is ever-changing but includes a range of pub classics, and their drinks include a variety of wines, cocktails, spirits, beers, soft drinks and hot drinks.

The White Cross

The White Cross is in a refurbished cotton mill warehouse next to Lancaster canal and can be found just outside of the city centre on Quarry Road. Their outdoor seating is situated right beside the canal, giving you a great view of the water as you enjoy their exquisite food and drink.

They offer a range of craft beers, spirits and wines. Their food includes pub favourites and a selection of burgers. You can book a table or show up and get an unreserved table on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Greaves Park

Greaves Park is a Grade II Listed building on Bowerham Road surrounded by beautiful parkland. It is a Chef & Brewer pub that provides tasty pub food and a range of beers and other drinks. They also have contactless ordering via an app that reduces unnecessary contact.

Lancaster Brewery

Lancaster Brewery is a little farther out on Wyresdale Road, right beside the farm shop. It has a vast outdoor seating space and offers a range of their own brewed beers, from their Lancaster Red, Lancaster Black and Lancaster Blonde.

They also have a range of wines, spirits and other drinks available. If you’re hungry, they have two independent food vendors set up in their seating area, providing freshly made pizzas, burgers and nachos. There is no need to book, just show up and let them find you and your friends a table.

If you’re looking for outdoor pubs and bars to go for a drink, there is no better place than Lancaster. You can find so many venues with outdoor seating available while we wait for restrictions to be lifted on indoor seating.
