Student-Friendly Gifts This Mother’s Day

With Mother’s Day fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about what you’re going to get for that number one woman in your life. Deadlines might be approaching, and Uni work might be piling up, but that’s no reason to forget about this special day where you get to thank your mum for everything she’s given you.

Happy Mother's Day

However, given that you’ve no doubt spent the majority of your student loan on gin and tonics and greasy kebabs, you might be thinking there’s no way you’ll be able to get your mother something she’ll love. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. There are plenty of bank account friendly ways to treat your mum this Mother’s Day. Here are some ideas:

Home-made Afternoon Tea

A lot of cafes and tea rooms offer delightful afternoon teas that any mother would love, but they can often be expensive. They seem quite steep for a load of little cakes and some tea. Well, instead, why not make your own afternoon tea? Set up a nice spread on the table at home – we’re sure your mum won’t mind you borrowing her best crockery – make some tasty sandwiches, cupcakes, a scone each and brew a pot of tea.

The advantage of a DIY afternoon tea is that you can customise the food and choose your mother’s favourite sandwich fillings and cupcake flavours. She’ll appreciate the effort, and you’ll be able to save on the cost of going out.

Photo Coasters

Lots of websites can create personalised gifts with photos. One not-too-costly option is coasters; people always seem to need more of them. Simply upload some photos; family photos would be a good choice, and in a few days you’ll have some photo custom coasters sent to your door. It’s a simplistic gift that doesn’t cost too much, and your mother will love them.

Hamper of Goodies

Who doesn’t love a good hamper? And if you make your own, you can save yourself a lot of money. Hampers don’t need to be expensive; start by sourcing a nice box to put everything in, card shops sell these or places like TK Max sell very pretty boxes that don’t cost very much.

Next, buy small gifts to put in the box. These can be picked up very cheaply from anywhere; pound shops, supermarkets or even charity shops. A chocolate bar, a notebook, bath bombs, a glasses case, a miniature bottle of gin or any manner of small items you think your mum would appreciate. Simply lay them in the box, throw in some shredded tissue paper and voila, you have your very own Mother’s Day hamper.

Jewellery Organiser

Why do mums always seem to have a mountain of jewellery? If your mother is one of those who has rings and necklaces strewn all over the house, why not consider a jewellery organiser? These can take the form of a box or a stand. You can pick them up from places like TK Max, or you may be able to find one in a charity shop.

Personal Spa Day

Everyone loves a spa day, but the cost of even just one treatment can be quite expensive, and it won’t help if you don’t live anywhere near a spa. So, why not create your own home spa treatments for your mother to enjoy? Face masks, homemade body scrubs using ingredients like sugar and coffee grounds, and essential oils to drop into a relaxing bath are all cheap ways you can give your mother that day of pampering she deserves.

Bake a Cake

Home baked goods are a great way to show that you care and that you put effort into your gift. Bonus points if your parents’ house is stocked full of the ingredients you need, so you don’t even need to spend a penny. Bake your mum’s favourite kind of cake, and it’s certain to be her favourite gift of the day.

Photo of Her Favourite Person (You)

OK, so this one might only work if you’re an only child (or you coordinate with your siblings to work together on this one), but mothers always love pictures of their children. They always seem to think that they don’t have enough; remember all those times she photographed you when you weren’t doing anything photo-taking worthy? Well, now you’re at Uni she probably misses seeing photos of you – other than the bathroom selfies from your nights out that she probably sees on Facebook. This Mother’s Day, take a nice photo of yourself, and maybe with your siblings as well, and put it in a nice frame for your mother to have at home. She’s certain to love it.

From everyone here at Student Housing Lancaster, we hope you have a fantastic Mother’s Day, and you’re able to find that perfect gift this year.
