Things to Consider When Choosing Your Student Accommodation

by | Mar 8, 2017 | Accommodation

One of the best things about being a student is getting to be independent, choosing your own home, your housemates and how you’re going to spend that student loan! However, choosing the perfect student housing can be challenging, as you try to balance your budget with your requirements.

So, what should you consider when you’re choosing your next home?

Location

One of the advantages of going to University in Lancaster is the size of the city. As it is relatively small, you have the benefit of everything being fairly close together. However, you should consider where you want to be based for the next year of your life. Some students would rather be close to town whereas others would prefer to be near to their University’s campus. Here in the city, we have student accommodation across Lancaster, so you can choose an area that suits you best.

You should consider whether the location will cause any issues; for example, if you find it difficult to concentrate when there is a little bit more noise, the centre of town may not be the best place for you to live.

You may also notice that there is a higher concentration of students around certain areas and streets such as Prospect Street and the Bowerham area – if you want to be surrounded by like-minded people, these are great areas to live.

Budget

When taking a look at our properties (you can take a look at our full property listings here) you will notice that there is something for every budget. This is something to think very carefully about, as your living costs will take up the biggest chunk of your budget.

It is a good idea to draw up a budget plan so you can identify how much money you can afford to pay for rent and living costs.

Thankfully, we have a number of properties at particularly low prices, starting from as little as £55 p/w – just take a look at this four bedroom house on Bradshaw Street!

Flat or House?

There are pros and cons to living in a flat or a house, so take the time to think about your needs. A house can often be bigger, giving you more space, but a flat often offers a more modern feel.

Sometimes it simply comes down to the feel and look of the home that sways you, so you may find that you end up choosing a flat when you had previously preferred the idea of a house – be open to both!

Housemates

Picking housemates can be a difficult decision as you choose which friends you feel you can live with for the next year of your life. Not only will you have to make a decision about who to live with but how many people to live with.

With houses starting at one bedroom to 10 and beyond, we will have a property to suit even large groups.
